Hi there. I'm a journalist, writer and editor based in Durham, North Carolina. Here's what I do. Interested or have questions? Get in touch: swade316@gmail.com.
Journalism
I like to find and report stories that serve the public interest and make complicated subjects easy and enjoyable to read about. While I'm drawn to a wide range of topics, I gravitate toward:
-
Investigations and features
-
Community engagement: stories driven by and produced for local audiences
-
The environment beat, especially environmental justice, environmental health, climate resilience, regulatory agencies and wildlife research and management
-
Other beats: addiction, pain science and its growing influence on the treatment of injuries and chronic pain, labor, courts, mental health
-
Services I offer: Reporting and stringing, research, editing, copy editing, fact-checking
Content Services
I also produce engaging content for businesses, nonprofits, universities and agencies, as long as their work falls outside the beats I cover as a reporter. I'm particularly interested in producing content related to the arts (all of them!), education and personal finance. I can do:
-
Articles and blog posts
-
Editing, copy editing and fact-checking
-
Research
-
Copy for newsletters, social media and infographics
-
Profiles, bios and website content
-
Ghostwriting
-
Case studies
-
Video and audio scripts
If you'd like to see samples of my content work, email me.
My background
I spent the first leg of my storytelling career writing and editing for World Wildlife, the quarterly magazine of World Wildlife Fund, before making the leap to journalism. Before going freelance, I covered Northeast Tennessee for the Bristol Herald Courier.
In my free time, I'm usually reading, hiking, watching SNL skits (the quality ones) or enjoying the good of goods: time with family and friends.
